Artist Statement (Out There):
When dealing with abstract images, it is often hard to write an artist statement. I know what my intent was in creating the images and what significance they hold for me, but I do not wish to impose my thoughts and feelings on others, nor influence viewers as they rely upon their own experiences to take in and interpret the work for themselves.
I am reminded of a young girl, perhaps 7 or 8 years old, walking through a visual art show with her father. She was passing by my photographs when she stopped in front of one and a huge smile appeared on her face. She pointed at the photograph and then said something to her father. The image was one of a somewhat abstracted tree stump. I politely went over and asked her what she had seen in the photograph. Her answer, “A Dragon!”, and another huge smile.
So, for this series of abstract images, my statement is simply a title, “Out There”. I invite viewers to see what they see, feel what they feel, and think what they think.
This series of photographs was taken in 2021.
