The Grand River runs through the middle of downtown Fergus, Ontario. It flows first over a dam and then into a narrower gorge where it must navigate its way through a maze of rocks, move around multiple corners, and continually fall downhill. Eventually the river empties itself into Lake Erie.

As it flows through Fergus, the river must break off into many different streams, making “choices”, because the overall volume is too great for it all to travel the same path through the obstacles. Some choices lead to smooth, easy flowing pathways, while others result in more tumultuous journeys.

Confusion arises. Sometimes the water will choose its own path, probably the one of least resistance, but at other times the choice is forced upon it as obstacles suddenly appear and it is pushed in whatever direction the overall body of water deems appropriate.

As I reflect on this series of photographs, I am struck by how closely the Grand River flowing through downtown Fergus mirrors our human journey through life.

This series of photographs was taken in 2021.
