Artist Statement (Smaragdi):
Smaragdi is a boutique hotel located on the Greek island of Sifnos.

I have always been fascinated with Sifnian architecture. Noted for its simplicity and cleanliness of form, the traditional building style of using a white stucco cube as the basic shape for structures is a stark contrast to the Canadian architectural norms of my homeland.

While this architectural design is impressive in its own right, it is the continuous play of light and shadow across the structural surfaces that intrigues me. As the Aegean sun moves across the sky, different parts of the buildings are revealed and emphasized. Constantly changing shapes are created. Textures are highlighted. Brush strokes left in the stucco by builders from generations past are revealed.

Such is this artistic beauty of hotel Smaragdi.
