18. the "Streets" of Venice
Thoughts and images from Venice, Italy, 2013.

Artist Statement (the "Streets" of Venice):
Venice is a city unlike any other. Rather than occupying one large piece of land, it is a cluster of 117 small islands joined to each other by some 450 pedestrian bridges. Taken as a whole, the densely built-upon islands and the waterways (canals) that separate them give the impression of a city that has either risen from the water or been built in it.
Lacking the traditional roadways of other cities, Venice relies upon its canals for transportation. Emergency services, products and freight for business and personal use, taxi and bus services, waste disposal, and in general, anything that is transported on the roads and streets of land-based cities moves throughout Venice by boat. The canals are, in fact, the "streets" of Venice.
